We are pleased to offer specialist endodontic care at Davidson’s Mains Dental. Our Specialist Endodontist, Dr Joanne Peat, accepts referrals from dentists across Edinburgh and the Lothians, as well as self-referrals from patients who would like their root canal treatment carried out by a specialist.
Joanne treats complex and difficult cases using a dental operating microscope, giving the magnification and illumination needed to locate, clean and seal root canals predictably. Every case is assessed on its own merits, and if root canal treatment is not the right answer for a tooth, we will tell you so and set out the alternatives.
Referred patients are seen for endodontic treatment only. Once treatment is complete, the patient returns to their own dentist for the definitive restoration and ongoing care.

Professional career
Dr Joanne Peat is a Specialist in Endodontics who focuses on managing patients with endodontic disease. She started her career in Lanarkshire, where she worked as a Dental Vocational Trainee from 2013 to 2014, providing general dentistry to the local population. She went on to complete further training as a Dental Core Trainee at the Royal London Hospital from 2014 to 2015, where she gained experience in multiple areas of dentistry.
She then spent five years with the Ministry of Defence from 2015 to 2020, providing dental care for service personnel, while also holding a teaching position at Glasgow Dental School. She held the position of Senior Clinical Lecturer in Endodontics at the University of Edinburgh from September 2023 until August 2026, where she was involved in teaching and training postgraduate students. She currently divides her time between Edinburgh and Shetland, where she works in the Public Dental Service as a Specialist Dental Officer, managing referrals for complex endodontic cases.
Education
Joanne qualified as a dentist from the University of Aberdeen in 2013. Her interest in endodontics led her to pursue postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh. In 2025 she was awarded the degree of Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDent) in Endodontology with distinction, and the Nairn Wilson Medal for clinical and academic excellence. In November 2025 she was awarded the Specialty Fellowship in Endodontics (FEndo) by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The Patient Journey
What happens at the assessment appointment

Assessment
Joanne reviews the referral, takes a full history and examines the tooth, including sensibility and special tests as required.

Imaging
Periapical radiographs are taken as standard. Where the anatomy is complex or the diagnosis unclear, a small-volume CBCT scan may be recommended. We arrange this with a local practice and review the scan before finalising the treatment plan.

Diagnosis and plan
The findings, the prognosis and the options — including the option not to treat — are discussed with the patient, with written confirmation of the plan and the fee.

Treatment
Treatment is completed over one or two appointments lasting between 60–90 minutes, under local anaesthetic, rubber dam isolation and with use of magnification.

Return to the referring dentist
A written report and post-operative radiographs are sent to the referring practice, with our recommendation on the definitive restoration and timescale.

Information for referring dentists
- Patients are seen for the referred endodontic problem only. We will not carry out other treatment or take the patient on for routine care without your agreement.
- You will receive a written report following assessment, and again on completion of treatment, with radiographs.
- Where a tooth has a poor prognosis we will say so, discuss the alternatives with the patient, and refer them back to you for restorative planning.
- We aim to see urgent cases quickly. Please flag any patient in acute pain when you refer and we will do our best to accommodate them.
- Joanne is happy to discuss a case informally before you refer — call the practice and we will arrange for her to come back to you.

Every case is confirmed in writing following assessment, once the anatomy and complexity of the tooth are known. The fees below are the starting point.

Root canal treatment explained
Root canal treatment, or endodontics, treats the soft tissue at the centre of a tooth — the pulp — when it has become inflamed or infected. This is usually the result of deep decay, a large or repeated restoration, a crack, or an injury to the tooth. Left untreated, the infection inside the tooth causes breakdown of the bone around the roots. This bone loss may progress over time, resulting in pain, infection and eventually tooth loss.
Treatment involves removing the damaged pulp, disinfecting and shaping the root canal system, then sealing it. This reduces or eliminates the bacteria within the tooth and allows the bone around the roots to heal. The tooth is then restored, most often with a crown or onlay, to protect it from fracture.
Despite its reputation, the treatment itself should feel much like having a filling. The tooth is thoroughly numbed and isolated with a rubber dam sheet.
Why see a specialist?
Some teeth are straightforward. Others have narrow, curved or hidden canals, have been treated before, or have not settled as expected. A specialist endodontist treats these cases every day, with equipment and magnification dedicated to the job, which gives a difficult tooth its best chance of being kept.
